Week 4!

It's yet another new week into the Home Economics and F&N lessons!

On Monday:

We had a chance to try out a teaching pedagogy method known as...
'Bus-Stop Activity'

We were split into groups by Mrs. Stevenson the moment we came into class and each group was told to have a laptop, notebook, and pen with them. Some of us in the group were assigned roles to be the Leader, Checker, and Recorder. The Leader was to, of course, lead the group and take initiatives in brainstorming for ideas. The Checker was to make sure that every thing runs smoothly and on time. The Recorder was to take notes of the ideas and answers to the questions in each bus-stop.

We were given 8 minutes to complete the task given at each bus-stop. It was indeed an exciting and thrilling experience as we had to research for the answers online with the laptop while the countdown timer was ticking away! Questions from topics such as Vitamins, Minerals and more were asked since the final aim of this activity is to 'Promote Healthy Eating'.

One of the bus-stop stations really left an impression on me as we were tasked to come up with actions/dance moves to this song about Healthy Eating which was to be sung in the tune of 'Jingle bells'. The song lyrics goes like this:

4 food groups, 4 food groups
Eat them everyday
Grains and dairy and protein
Fruits and Vegetables, hey!
4 food groups, 4 food groups
Eat in a balanced way
Use Fats & Oils, sugar salt
Sparingly in every meal, hey!
4 food groups, 4 food groups
Eat them everyday
Help your body grow to be
Strong in every way, hey!

I guess this song will be stuck in our minds for a long time! :)

At the end of all five bus-stop stations, each group had to come up with a skit/role-play/advert on promoting healthy eating, and the '4 food groups' song was to be incorporated in it. I am sure many of us, including Mrs Stevenson, had a great time watching each other perform. We had a good laugh for some creative and humorous acts too!

Overall, I feel that the Bus-stop activity is a good method used to engage students in the lessons as it brings them through experiential learning, where information can be learnt and even memorized in a fun way. I would definitely apply this pedagogy I've learnt and come up with my own set of Bus-stop activities for my students in future.

P/s. It's such a pity that we didn't realize we should take photos of us and our classmates doing this activity!

On Wednesday:

F&N Lesson was cancelled due to NIE's Learning Festival, where students and even staff come together to organize and take part in different activities together.

Our CCA, Food & Consumer Studies Club (FCS Club), organized a carnival-themed cooking workshop for the school and Liyana was part of the team that helped out as assistants then. Here are some photos of the yummy dishes that were prepared! (and I bet they had fun goofing around with the props!)

I'm sure it was an enriching and 'mouth-watering' experience for the participants and the people who helped! :)
